Ready, Set, Go! Here’s 3 Tips to Get Back in the Gym

Are you feeling a little (or a lot) out of shape? Has it been ages since you last stepped foot in the gym? If so, you might be ready to get back on the fitness wagon and make some positive changes. But before you jump right into working out, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Read our 3 quick tips on how to get back in the gym while staying motivated and having fun.

1. Take It Slow

Rome wasn't built in a day—and neither were six-pack abs! The most important thing is to take your time getting back into shape. Trying to do too much too soon may cause injury or burnout. So start small and increase your intensity gradually over time. Set "S.M.A.R.T." Goals for yourself to create an achievable plan that works for your lifestyle and stick with it! And don’t forget to reward yourself when you hit those milestones—you deserve it!

2. Don’t Let Fear Stop You

We all have days when we don’t feel like exercising—it happens! But if you find yourself avoiding the gym altogether because of fear or anxiety, try not to let those feelings stop you from achieving your goals. Accountability is easiest to have with a friend or workout partner, so try going to the gym with a friend who can motivate and encourage you along the way. Or join our group class where everyone is working together towards similar goals and pushing each other forward. Most importantly, be kind to yourself—remember that everyone has bad days, even professional athletes!

3. Mix It Up

One of the best ways to stay motivated is by mixing up your workouts so that they never become boring or routine. Find activities that match your interests—maybe it's boxing —and take advantage of different accountability coaches and classes at your local RockBox. That way, you'll look forward to exercising instead of dreading it!

Getting back into shape doesn't have to be intimidating or overwhelming — if anything, it should be fun and rewarding! By taking things slow and easy (but still challenging!), being open to trying new activities, and surrounding yourself with supportive people, eventually working out will become second nature. So go ahead, get out there and start enjoying working out again; before long, you'll thank yourself for taking that first step towards better health!
